Twilight Trekkers ready to hit the open trails for this year’s Kilometres for CCD fundraiser

Leah Hoogkamp is gathering her Twilight Trekkers once again as they prepare for this year’s Kilometres for CCD event taking place at Purple Woods Conservation Area on Sept. 30.

For the past two years team members have walked trails in all eight municipalities of Durham Region as a warmup to the event at Purple Woods. It’s their way of team building leading up to the walk.

“We do as much as we can. It’s a fun week,” she said.

On each trail Leah takes photos and video that she posts to her social media account to update everyone who is supporting her on the walk. Each walk is done after work, hence the name of the team, Twilight Trekkers.

Leah participates in this fundraiser because she firmly believes in Community Care Durham’s mission of Supporting People, Strengthening Community. Money raised from the event allows CCD to continue to provide support services such as Meals on Wheels, Community Nursing, COPE Mental Health and Community Food Box.

“Every little bit helps,” Leah said. “I know there is more demand for our services so if we can help support some of our programs, it will benefit the people we’re here to serve – our clients.”

Leah is looking forward to the Sept.30 walk at Purple Woods Conservation Area where the Trekkers will participate. Last year she said the group had a lot of fun and the facilities were amazing.

“Purple Woods is a beautiful venue. The view is spectacular,” she said.

The timing is perfect as well as it’s Leah’s favorite time of year to hike. She said the fall colours and the crisp fresh air make it a wonderful time to be outdoors.

“I love hiking in the fall. It is a nice time of the year,” she said.

The Trekkers have an open invitation for new team members to those who are interested in joining a team.

“We’re inviting other hiking enthusiasts to join,” Leah said.

The team has a goal of raising $5,000 and so far, they’re off to a good start.
