Lisa Belcourt is a fundraiser who loves a challenge.
For 18 years, she’s raised money for Community Care Durham’s fundraising walks. Every year, she improves her previous year’s fundraising totals. Last year, Lisa raised an incredible $3,646 during our Kilometres for CCD walk. So far this year, her fundraising total sits at $3,631, and she’s confident she’ll exceed last year’s total before the walk on September 21 at Cullen Central Park. It runs from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
“I start early,” she said. “People know I’ll be calling.”
In the 18 years Lisa has participated in CCD’s fundraising walks, she has raised about $40,000, making her the organization’s top individual fundraiser. The walk money helps the organization continue providing services for individuals with needs related to aging, physical or mental health and those who care for them.
Lisa comes by her fundraising talents naturally. Her father, Marc, worked in sales his whole life, and her brother Stephen is also in sales. It helps, too, that Lisa is a people person who is not shy about conversing with someone she’s just met.
“I love getting to meet all kinds of different people,” she said. “I’ve met a lot of people (over the years).”
While Lisa is naturally talented at fundraising, she said it makes her feel good to know that the money is helping people who need it.
“I love helping other people. I put myself on the back burner, and I help other people. I love it,” she said.
She often jokes that this year’s fundraiser will be her last, just to see how people react. However, she intends to help CCD as long as she can.
“I will keep doing it (fundraising) until I’m 70 or 80. I’m just 55 right now,” Lisa said with a smile.
