Exercise & Falls Prevention

In April 2013, the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care announced that additional seniors and patients across the province will benefit from improved access to high-quality physiotherapy, exercise and falls prevention classes.  Part of that announcement was a commitment to additional funding for exercise and falls prevention classes in community settings across the province.  Specifically, in order to ensure that regular group therapy services currently being offered to seniors in retirement homes and other group settings are maintained, as well as expanded in communities across the province, the government committed $10 million in exercise and falls prevention classes to ensure services for approximately 130,000 seniors.

The primary objectives of the Exercise & Falls Prevention initiative are to:
Donate Now Through CanadaHelps.org!
Maintain and expand exercise and falls prevention service levels;
Improve access to exercise and falls prevention classes across geographic areas, including small and rural communities; and
Build upon and complement existing exercise and falls prevention initiatives.
In Durham Region, two organizations have been identified as preferred providers for exercise and falls prevention classes: Community Care Durham (CCD) and Oshawa Senior Citizens Centres (OSCC).  The OSCC are responsible for classes in Oshawa, Whitby and Courtice.  You can contact OSCC at: (905) 576-6712 or info@oscc.ca. Their website is www.oscc.ca.

CCD is responsible for classes in Pickering, Ajax, Bowmanville, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. Classes are open to not only the residents of these facilities, but to members of the community as well, at no cost.  Any Durham resident interested in joining an Exercise or Falls Prevention class is encouraged to contact the local facility hosting a class in your area.
